Technology to me is something I values as an everyday necessity. Wether it be for fun like just strolling through Instagram and Tiktok or snap chatting someone or then using it for educational purposes for school, I use technology everyday. Technology has become something that is very popular and used at almost everything now a days. Whether it be checking into a doctors office, ordering at a restaurant or even using technology inside a classroom, technology has becomes something that is becoming part of our everyday lives. I first become exposed to technology after my 4th grade graduation by getting my first phone. Since then I have always thought and believed how phones are an important part of our lives. For me, getting a phone was a really big moment because I was able to talk to anyone whenever I wanted. I believe having a phone is also important because it also allows for someone if really need to call if they need help. Since getting my first phone, which wasn't anything to fancy, I have since gotten many iPhones. iPhones, are now something that almost everyone has because of how popular they are. Being able to be anywhere around the world and FaceTime someone, still amazes me. When looking at how my online presence, I believe I have a heavy one. I have many social media platforms and use them pretty often. Whether it be on Snapchat, Instagram, Tiktok, facebook or even linked inn, I seem to uses these platform at least once a day. 

When looking at my online presence, the only thing that may need editing is how much time I spend on it. I will admit that I use social media a lot. I could spend hours on end just on it scrolling post after post. There has been days I have been on Tiktok for over five hours. Although most of what I am looking at or watching is mindless stuff, I have been able to watch and find information that is actually very knowable to learn about. I believe in this generation almost everyone I know has all platforms of social media and uses them very frequently. Whether it be making plans with my friends on Snapchat or sending funny videos to someone on Tiktok, I have seen myself talking to people on social media platforms more than texting someone. 

I believe since the use have technology has become so popular, it has had many issues that have come along with it. Like the video we watched in class about the dark side of technology, they're many issues that follow it. Since people like to post everything they do on their social media thats they do, this causes other people to get fomo. Fomo has become something that is a major negative to technology because it can lead to depression. Having the feeling of being left out is something that no one wants to deal with. Another major issue of technology is the idea of people feeling insecure. Seeing how people may either have a perfect body or seem to have everything can cause people to feel about themself. This has become a more recent issue with especially girls feeling like they are not good enough. There is much more social media that is all about how one looks and what they post, there is much out their, I find very informative.

The use of technology has many pros and cons to it. Whether it be for calling for help, just talking to a friend or even using technology at the store to order something, the use has become something that is part of our everyday lives. While many pros to to the use of technology there are also cons such as people spending too much time on it and also it is now causing people to have mental health problems. Technology is something that is not gonna go away but only going to become more popular, and more part of our everyday lives. 

Blog Post #9: Whistleblowing

Whistleblowing is defined as someone who informs about person or organization about the wrong doings or illegal activities that are going on. Whistleblowing is basically "blowing the whistle" on what is going wrong and needs to stoped. When looking the idea of whistleblowing and specking publicly on what is going wrong over a person or an organization, it is not what happens first. Before going public with the information you have, speaking to people within the company is usually the best option. This is so trying to resolve the issue that way can save a lot more issues down the line. Most of times because of that step, is why people blow the whistle of the company or person, because they just brush them off and nothing ever changes. When whistleblowing a company it takes a lot of courage because you are going out in public and calling them out for their wrong doings. When also doing this it they are also risking breaking the honor code of ethics of their company. This is because sometimes the information that you are outing to the public is private information. Whistleblowing has many pros and cons to it because of the outcome that can come with it. 

The reason for someone to blow the whistle on a company or person is something that can either a pro or a con. While you would automatically think how someone calling out the wrong doings of someone or a company would be a good thing many people would disagree. While looking and understanding whistleblowing there are many cons to it. Some cons to whistleblowing are you may lose your job, you can face retaliation, people may not believe what you are saying or choose to ignore you and then still use that company and people may stop trusting you. When understanding how people may not believe what are saying or even choose to ignore you, this is any issue because what you are trying to spread the word about, people may just not care. After many people Whistleblow a company, people still continue to that company. While it may be a good thing to call out a person or company on their wrong doing, people may start to not truth you because of what you did.Although some may think whistleblowing could just have problems after doing so, there are many benefits to doing so. With whistleblowing you are able to call out the company for its wrong doing and you are letting the public know what is going on. This is important to let people know what is going so people can see what may be their favorite company is doing behind close doors. Weather it be something that is very small or something is a really big deal for people to know about, I believe that people who blow the whistle on their company are very brave. Having the possibility to lose your job, have people stop trusting you and people just not believing you is something that too many is worth it because they are calling out the company or person that they are doing wring that was not getting fixed before. Whistleblowing is something takes much courage to do.

Artificial intelligence which is known as AI, is the idea that computers and all technology is are able to preform tasks that were once done by only humans. The idea of artificial intelligence has become very popular in China and the United States. The ability of AI has become something with many pros and cons to it. With the ability to follow what you are doing online, see when you are cross the street, face recognization, help stop criminal threats online, and the many more abilities it has, people are both looking at as a positive and a negative. Throughout the first creation of artificial intelligence, many people have valued it as something that is becoming too invasive. With the government now having the ability to watch out every more online, some think this is overbearing. While yes that can be a con to this on, it now has the ability to see potential threats that someone may do. In the video we watched in class called In the Age of AI, it gave us an example of AI that is used in China, and how face recognization is becoming huge there. The explained how people their if they J-walk their face will be scanned by cameras on the streets and the person will get in trouble. This was crazy to learn about because of how big face recognization from AI is become to now being able to stop something so small. With the idea of how artificial intelligence is taking over human jobs, one job that is becoming bigger and really opened my eyes were self driving cars. Self driving cars has been something that have always been in movies and tv shows, but now is something is actually becoming a thing which is crazy. Although many cons to AI such has the ability for now the government to see everything you are doing online, this is something that is not going away anything soon but only going to become a bigger part of life. 

Blog Post #7: Antiwar Voices

Antiwar voices are something we never really see or hear about on mainstream media. Antiwar voices are voices of people who speak out against the war. This idea has been going on for centuries over people not agreeing with wars. There are many websites such as antiwar.com and American Conservative, that speak out about their hatred for wars. These websites although have a following aren't highly spoken about. Many people who are antiwar are usually silenced. This has been the same over many, many years. I believe these people are silenced because the mainstream media and even the government doesn't want more people to learn about these groups and also to hid the fact that what they are saying goes against what government believes. Before taking this class, I have never heard over anyone who was antiwar nor have ever seen any of these websites. Having to seek out websites like this and it not being spoken about in the media is just because the government doesn't like and agree with what these people are saying. I think government doesn't agree with these groups because they need people to want to be in the army, they put a lot of money towards it so they need people to value it for the coast and also the army protects us from foreign countries. This is important for the reason why the government would hid these groups from the rest of society. I beilve the the government should have the power to hid groups like this. This is because they are not a treat to the rest of society. Just because they don't like or agree with them doesn't make it okay they hid these peoples free speech from everyone else. Mainstream media should be allowed to post content like this and the government shouldn't be able to hid it.

Diffusion of innovations is the idea of how and why new technology will sometimes become so popular. One item that have majorly spread because of diffusion of innovation is the the product we all know use, the iPhone. The iPhone first became popular right when it became realized to the public, which was in the year 2007. In the first four years of just being around Apple says they said over 100 million units. The reasoning to why many people first started to buy the iPhone was because the advertising the company did. Apple showed off all the cool, trendy tricks this phone was able to do. People also started to buy this phone because of the quality of it. It was seen to have a higher quality than many of the other phones out there. When looking at people who were late adaptors to getting the iPhone this was because the iPhone was something that almost because an essential product. Also looking at grandparents it gave them a way to easily connect with their children, grandchildren, and friends. IPhones allow for people to communicate easily with the use of not just picking up the face to call someone, but also FaceTiming someone and looking at the other person face. Some people may not adapt to the iPhone because they don't trust Apple, they believe it is too complicated to use, or they just can not afford it. Some negative consequences of the iPhone is that people may get too addicted to it. Having an iPhone has become very beneficial because it allows you to stay connected with people from anywhere at anytime. I believe the pros outweigh the cons because the iPhone has become such a staple in todays society, without it, it is hard to do most things. 

Blog #5: Instagram

The app Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launched the app on October 6, 2010.  That first day of Instagram being public to people they gained 25,000 users. They created this app to allow for people to communicate through photos. In December of 2010, only two months after the launch of Instagram, the app hit one million users. Two years after the launch of Instagram, in 2012, the company Facebook bought out Instagram. They purchased it for 1 billion dollars. When instagram was first created, it was only offered for people who had iPhones, but in April of 2012, it was realized to Android users. From that the app was downloaded more than one million times just in that day alone. In the year 2016, Instagram had many new changes to the app. Starting in May of that year, Instagram changed the logo to the one see today. The new logo is much brighter and has more color appeal to it. Another change they made was the created the ability to post videos. This changed how Instagram originally started as only posting photos, so now having the ability to post videos, was a big change on the platform. Instagram also made an update to the app by adding direct messages. Direct messaging allowed for users to chat one on one privately. Lastly in the year 2016, they added the feature of posting stories. Stories, on Instagram are a way to post either an photo or video. These last for only 10 seconds and are on peoples feed for 24 hours. This allows for people to post something but not have it stay on their page past a day. Throughout the history of Instagram, there have been many updates and changes to the platform that has made it into the app most people still use today. 

With having Instagram as such a popular form of social media, it also has many impacts to it; starting with the idea of how it allows to post images. Having the ability to be anywhere and even at anytime just take out your phone and post whatever you want is become very beneficial. This allows you also to share what you are doing, but through posting photos or videos. Being tied to being able to post whatever you want, has made some people have what is known as online persona. Having an online persona means, what you post online can seem better than what you are actually doing or even how you are feeling. Another impact Instagram has is the affect it has on mental health. Seeing what other people post can make one jealous either by how they look or even by what someone else is doing. This has caused many people to struggle with mental heath issues. I personally don't think this is Instagram's fault, but by how much as a whole everyone is using social media. The last impact of Instagram is how companies can seem products to people and also how this platform allows for people to get anything important out to a large number of people. These two impacts go hand and hand because Instagram is such a large platform that anyone could reach a larger number of people just by posting something. Whether it be posting about trying to sell a product for a company, such as, clothes, makeup or even posting about something political; doing this allows for you to get any word out to a large number of people. 

Blog Post #4: Individual Self-Fulfillment

The eight values of free expression give us the ability to say and question parts of the government and also have free speech. This is allowed by the First Amendment which allows American citizens to speak about what they want whether it be true or false. The value that stands out to me the most is marketplace of ideas. This value of free expression was created by John Milton and John Stuart Mills. John Milton was an English poet and he founded this idea in the year 1644, in his work Areopagitica. John Mills, created this concept in the year 1859 in his book called On Liberty. Mill's was an English language philosopher. The creation of this value is to allow people to have free trade in ideas about any market and also allowing people to have there own opinion about any good and speech about them. As stated in an article The First Amendment Encyclopedia it states how "the marketplace of ideas refers to the belief that the test of truth or acceptance of ideas depends on their competition with one another and not on the opinion of a censor, whether one provided by the government or by some other authority." This means that when someone expresses their own opinion about anything they want, the government or any company being spoken about, can't tell them they can't say that. This deals with the First Amendment and the topic of free speech.

 The creation of marketplace of ideas or, also known as, free trade in ideas, or even competition of the market allows for people to have a voice about ideas discuss about ideas about any topic they want to speak about. This being said, when dealing with a specific company and their products that they created with out a patent on a product or good, the government or anyone else can't stop someone from speaking and sharing what they think or sharing ideas about a good. Having this in place is important so the government can't get involved with ones ability of free speech. 

This idea of free speech in the marketplace of ideas has become very popular with the creation of social media. Social media allows for anyone to voice their opinion on any given topic or idea. When looking at it from the point of free speech of the marketplace of ideas have given people to now express their concerns about the free market.  This has given the ability to speak about anything going on that they want to speak about. This can be anything from the Corona Virus to the storming of the Capital. Having social media has made people opinions about specificities topics or ideas become stronger, but this is allowed with have free speech especially in a marketplace of ideas. 

Personally, I am not one to speak about anything major in the news publicly or even post about its on social media. Given everything going on in the news and how it have created a lot of debate about many topics that are being spoken about, I tend to stay away from that. Although I stay away from posting about most consortial topics I always see them on most of my social media platforms I use. Whether it be Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, or Facebook, I notice that many people post their opinions about any topic they want to speak about with no issue. This is because of marketplace of ideas and how it allows for someone free speech. 

Although we a marketplace of ideas and free speech, the issue of censorship has been a raising concern lately. Even with having free speech, the company Twitter, has banned Donald Trumps page. On a news article from CNN, it states that even if Trump was going to run for President again, he will be permanently ban from this social media platform. To me this goes against free speech and what is described in marketplace of ideas. This is a raising concern and issue I see because it makes a statement that anyone has the ability to just get banned or even removed for any platform whenever the company wants. Having marketplace of ideas is any important concept to have but in recent times has made me question if it is even a value anymore.
